Weight range and progression

Both systems are heavy enough for demanding home strength training, but the way they progress is different.

The Stealth Black Edition is available in three versions:

A 5lb increase is approximately 2.26kg per dumbbell. When using a pair, the next setting therefore adds about 4.5kg to the combined load.

That can be acceptable for rows, Romanian deadlifts and heavier presses, but it is a comparatively large jump for smaller upper-body movements.

The practical difference is control. The Stealth Black Edition gives you more opportunities to progress before reaching the same broad weight class.

Adjustment speed and ease of use

The Stealth Black Edition uses a twist-to-select handle. Place the dumbbell fully into its base, rotate the handle to the required weight and lift vertically.

The selected plates lock into the handle while the unused plates remain in the base.

The BowFlex SelectTech 1090i uses a dial at each end. BowFlex instructs users to select the same value on both dials before lifting the dumbbell vertically from the base.

Both systems are quick compared with spinlock dumbbells. The difference is that the Stealth Black Edition completes the selection through one control, while the BowFlex SelectTech 1090i requires two matching selections.

Plate-lock design and the BowFlex failure concern

The main durability concern with the BowFlex SelectTech 1090i is not the headline weight range. It is the plate-locking system.

Each BowFlex plate uses a locking tab, and the handle relies on its selector mechanism to engage the correct plates.

The official BowFlex owner’s manual tells owners to check that every plate has a locking tab, carry out a locking-mechanism test and stop using a dumbbell if parts are worn or damaged.

It also warns that dropping the dumbbell can damage the plates or locking mechanism, allowing plates to disengage from the handle.

This is more than a theoretical weakness. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission announced an adjustable-dumbbell recall covering BowFlex 1090 and 552 models on 5 June 2025 because weight plates could dislodge during use.

The notice covered roughly 3.84 million dumbbells across both models. It recorded 349 reports of plates dislodging and 111 injuries among units sold by the former Nautilus business and the newer Johnson Health Tech operation.

There was also a separate 2012 US selector-dial recall involving BowFlex SelectTech 1090 dumbbells, after dial failures could allow plates to fall when a dumbbell was lifted from its cradle.

The regional limitation matters. BowFlex states on its global recall page that the 2025 recall applies only in the United States and that customers outside the US may continue using their dumbbells.

A UK owner should therefore check the precise model, serial number and advice supplied with their unit rather than assuming the US remedy applies.

It would also be too broad to claim that every BowFlex SelectTech 1090i will fail.

The evidence does show, however, that plate retention and selector integrity are genuine considerations for this design. A used model of uncertain age deserves particular care.

Why the Stealth Black Edition is more robust and serviceable

The Stealth Black Edition uses an upgraded internal mechanism, machined plates with replaceable nylon inserts and a secure plate-locking system.

The powder-coated finish is intended to improve corrosion resistance in home and garage gym environments.

No adjustable dumbbell with a selection mechanism should be treated like a solid cast dumbbell. Assassin Goods states that the Stealth Black Edition should not be dropped or thrown, as misuse can damage its plates or adjustment mechanism.

Robust does not mean indestructible.

The stronger ownership case comes from repairability. Assassin Goods publishes a replacement-parts range for the Stealth Black Edition, with components listed from £5.

If an insert or another serviceable part becomes worn or damaged, the owner can identify and order the relevant component rather than automatically replacing the complete dumbbell.

BowFlex does operate parts and technical support, so it would be inaccurate to say that no BowFlex replacement part exists anywhere.

The distinction is access. The global BowFlex SelectTech 1090i page and accessories shop do not provide a comparable, openly priced catalogue of individual 1090i plate-lock components for direct UK purchase.

Owners are directed towards customer support, and availability can depend on location, product age and warranty status.

For a UK buyer assessing ten-year ownership rather than first-day convenience, publicly listed parts are a meaningful advantage.
